《Dear My Friend,》
Keung To’s letter to his dear friend “Dear My Friend,”
If I have lost you now,
I wish you have transformed into stardust
And we can meet again under the starry sky.
Keung To’s latest single “Dear My Friend,” is a letter dedicated to his late dear friend (nickname 中峰pronounced as “Jung Fung” in English). The lyricist Riley Lam shared that it was rare to receive a lengthy passage from the singer prior to the melody. Between the lines of the passage, there were smiles, passion and tears, and the long-standing nostalgia and feelings were frank and straight forward. Hence, as a lyricist, he had to be committed to his duty as a “letter writer” and write this letter to his friend. May all those who have departed transform into stars in the sky, and we will see each other whenever we look up".
Below is the passage Keung To gave to lyricist Riley Lam:
“I would like to dedicate this new song to my late dear friend. He was down-to-earth, honest and upright, around 30 years old, yet he had never been in love with anyone, nor had he ever held a girl's hand. He was just simple and uncomplicated. He was content with his life and had no particular desire or want; he had been in the same job as a technician for many years and had little ambition for a hugely successful career; he merely wanted to live through his days well in simplicity.
We had known each other from a young age, both overweight at the time and obsessed with basketball. We met by chance and, ever since, we frequented the basketball courts of Victoria Park to practise and get drenched in sweat. We had a friend as well, James, and together we called ourselves “The Victoria Park Three Musketeers”. The times spent with them were always the happiest and most carefree, perhaps it made up for my growing up without siblings. We made a wish back then: one day, when we have our own families, we will bring our wives and children to America to play street ball.
I still remember that for all the singing contests I took part in, 中峰 was always there to cheer for me; when I was enduring my weight-loss program, 中峰 always accompanied me to the gym willingly to shed off weight; we would often travel to Taiwan and Japan together for holidays and enjoy local delicacies; we had also spent New Year’s Eve counting down together at the Victoria Harbourfront, enjoying the fireworks and making our new year wishes. And when I was fortunate enough to embark on my journey in the showbiz, 中峰 had always been there for me, supporting and encouraging me.
Yet, life is full of twists and turns: one March evening this year (2021), whilst we were on our way back home after playing basketball, 中峰 suddenly dropped to the ground and fell into a spasm. After we called for an ambulance, I accompanied him to the hospital emergency room. Unfortunately, the doctors could not bring him back, and that was how 中峰 left us, in deep regrets and profound sadness.
As such, I would like to produce a song to pay tribute to my brother-like buddy who had accompanied me over the years.”
